Why buy a single M iron?

To replace one lost or damaged from a set you already own, or to add a long iron a shorter set did not include. Matching the generation and variant matters, since lofts moved across the line.

Will a single iron match my existing set?

Only reliably if the generation is the same. An M2 7 iron and an M4 7 iron differ in loft and length, so a mismatched replacement will leave a gap or a duplicate.
